The Murder of PC Austwick
PC Alfred Austwick was born and grew up in the tiny hamlet of Lumby, North Yorkshire.
He had been a commanding and respected figure in the police force, but was murdered by a single gunshot just before midnight on Saturday the 31st July 1886 in Dodworth, near Barnsley. He was just 30 years old. His murderer, a local miner, escaped from the scene and a national search was undertaken which lasted several weeks.
This is the compelling story of a respected policeman, the police search and the fate of Austwick’s murderer as reported in newspapers of the time.
